Aston Villa's manager Unai Emery expressed his frustration after his team's lack of clinical finishing led to a disappointing loss against Fulham. Can they bounce back in their next matches?
Aston Villa's defeat at Craven Cottage left manager Unai Emery visibly frustrated. The team squandered several clear chances, costing them crucial points in their pursuit of a top-four finish. "Those four chances in 90 minutes should have been converted into goals, but we were not clinical," Emery said in the post-match press conference. "We have to continue practicing to score with the chances we had."
Villa's away form has been inconsistent this season, with six losses and only one point from five matches. Despite this, they have managed to secure three points in half of their away games. Emery pointed out the team's wastefulness not just against Fulham but also in their recent match against Nottingham. "We had two good chances, one for Morgan and one for Watkins. We couldn’t dominate as we wanted because they marked us tightly, like many teams do against us."
The manager noted that Villa created more opportunities in the second half but still failed to convert. "We created two very good chances to score – one for Watkins and another for Tammy Abraham. In Nottingham, it was the same story. I take responsibility to correct this."
Following the loss, Villa dropped to fifth place as Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Both teams now sit on 58 points, but Manchester United lurks close behind with a game in hand. Before the match, Emery had set his sights on challenging United for a Champions League spot, but now he may need to focus on winning one game at a time.
Villa still has a shot at the Europa League as they prepare for a semi-final this midweek. Their remaining fixtures include tough matches against relegation-threatened Spurs and Liverpool, along with away games at Burnley and Manchester City. The pressure is on for Emery and his squad to find their scoring touch quickly.
