Peter Simpson, a versatile defender for Arsenal, has passed away at the age of 81. His adaptability on the pitch made a lasting impact on the club's history.

Former Arsenal defender Peter Simpson has passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply with fans and players alike. Known for his versatility, Simpson was a key figure in Arsenal's 1971 Double-winning side, showcasing his ability to play multiple positions with ease.

Simpson made his debut in March 1964 against Chelsea, a match that ended in a 4-2 defeat. Over the years, he evolved from a full back to a centre half, solidifying his place in the team by the late 1960s. In a time when substitutes were a rarity, Simpson's adaptability was crucial. "I turned out as a full back and a midfielder if I needed to," he recalled in a 1996 interview. "I even played up front a couple of times. It was helpful for learning how to read the game."

Despite his talent, Simpson struggled with self-doubt throughout his career. He often felt he wasn’t good enough, a sentiment he shared during our coffee chat in Gorleston. "I always doubted my own ability. It took Bertie Mee and Frank McLintock hammering me to get me going," he admitted. This imposter syndrome lingered, even as he received calls from England manager Alf Ramsey for national squad selections.

Frank McLintock, his teammate, believed that with a bit more confidence and pace, Simpson could have earned numerous caps for England. "If ‘Stan’ had believed in himself a bit more, he would have won 50 caps," McLintock said. Simpson's natural talent as a ball-playing defender was rare for his time, yet he never fully embraced his potential.

Even in his early 50s, Simpson maintained a fit and healthy appearance, a testament to his active lifestyle post-retirement. He reflected on his time at Arsenal with a mix of pride and humility, embodying the spirit of a player who gave his all for the club. As fans remember him, Simpson's story serves as a reminder of the dedication and resilience that defines the beautiful game.
