Mike Dean stood firm on the decision to allow Daniel Munoz's contentious goal during Liverpool's win over Crystal Palace. The debate around the incident is sure to linger.
Mike Dean, the former Premier League referee, firmly backed the officials' decision to allow Daniel Munoz's controversial goal during Liverpool's 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace. The incident unfolded in the 71st minute when Liverpool was leading 2-0.
Freddie Woodman, Liverpool's goalkeeper, had just made two impressive saves but found himself in trouble after a one-on-one with Ismaila Sarr. He caught his knee in the turf and went down in visible pain. While Woodman lay injured, Munoz capitalized on the situation, lifting the ball over him and scoring, cutting Liverpool's lead in half.
Liverpool players and manager Arne Slot were understandably furious. They felt the goal should have been disallowed due to Woodman's injury. However, Dean, speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, insisted the goal was legitimate. "It can’t not be a goal. There’s nothing else you can do... even though Woodman’s injured, he gets back up to try and stop the ball anyway and goes back down. It’s a goal," Dean stated.
The controversy didn't stop there. Liverpool fans were incensed, especially after one supporter threw an object at Munoz as he prepared for a throw-in shortly after the goal. The debate raged on: Should Munoz have shown sportsmanship and refrained from shooting? Should referee Andy Madley have halted play upon noticing Woodman's injury?
Despite the uproar, Liverpool managed to regain their composure and weather a spell of pressure from Palace. Florian Wirtz sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal, propelling the Reds into the Premier League's top four for the first time since January. The Munoz goal will certainly be remembered, but Liverpool's resilience proved decisive in the end.
