Gary Neville believes Liverpool is nearly guaranteed a spot in next season's Champions League. Can they maintain their momentum through the final matches?
Gary Neville has expressed strong confidence in Liverpool's chances of qualifying for the Champions League, stating he is '99% certain' they will secure a spot in the prestigious tournament. The Reds have been in impressive form, winning all three of their Premier League matches in April, which has propelled them into fourth place, eight points clear of Brighton in sixth with just four games remaining.
After a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace, Liverpool's chances of finishing in the top five soared to 96.92%, according to Opta projections. It appears that only a significant collapse could see them drop out of the Champions League places as the season winds down.
On his podcast, Neville remarked, "Liverpool have got eight points [of a gap to sixth], haven’t they, with four games to go... I’m 95%-99% certain that they’re gonna be in the Champions League. They won’t be thinking that, they’ll think they’ve got to do the job, but I don’t see the other teams winning the games they have to win, or Liverpool dropping all the points that they would need to drop."
While Liverpool looks set to finish the job, they should remember the lessons from the 2017/18 season. Back then, they held a seven-point lead over fifth-placed Chelsea with four matches left but stumbled through the run-in, only securing Champions League qualification on the final day. That season ended with them lifting the trophy a year later, but the path to success was far from straightforward.
Liverpool still faces challenging fixtures ahead, and while they enjoy a comfortable cushion, they must remain vigilant. The final weeks of the season can be unpredictable, and the Reds need to ensure their top-five status isn’t jeopardized as they push toward the finish line.
