Everton's youth teams had a weekend of highs and lows, with the Under-18s shining against Newcastle while the Under-21s struggled against Brighton.

Everton's youth teams faced contrasting fortunes over the weekend, leaving fans with a mix of pride and disappointment. The Under-18s delivered a stellar performance against Newcastle at Finch Farm, while the Under-21s fell short against Brighton on the South Coast.

The Under-18s kicked off their match on Saturday with a bang. Jake Doughty opened the scoring just 12 minutes in, setting the tone for a dominant first half. Winger Charlie Stewart and Jonathan Nsangou added to the tally, with Doughty netting his second before the break. The Toffees went into halftime leading 4-0, thanks in part to Kean Wren's brilliant assists.

Newcastle fought back after the break, pulling two goals back within the first 20 minutes. However, the Toffees held firm and secured the victory, propelling them to third place in the league, just behind the two Manchester giants. Manager Keith Southern praised his squad's first-half display, calling it their best performance of the season. "We really were outstanding," he said. "In the second half, we had to show a different side of it. The lads stuck at it, defended the box, defended set pieces."

Meanwhile, the Under-21s faced a tougher challenge against Brighton on Sunday. Missing their leading goalscorer Braiden Graham, who has netted 18 goals across competitions, the team struggled to find their rhythm. Despite the absence of key players, they managed to keep the score at 0-1 until the second half.

Brighton's experienced Solly March, with 266 first-team appearances under his belt, came off the bench and turned the tide. The Toffees conceded three goals in quick succession, with the final blow coming in the first minute of added time when Brighton scored twice in rapid succession. It was a disappointing end to a match that had started with promise but quickly unraveled.

The weekend showcased the highs and lows of youth football. While the Under-18s celebrated a well-deserved victory, the Under-21s will need to regroup and learn from their mistakes as they look ahead to their next challenges.
