Everton Women faced a tough challenge against Chelsea, falling 4-1 in a Barclays Women's Super League match at Goodison Park. Manager Scott Phelan praised his team's effort but acknowledged they were outmatched by the reigning champions.
The first half was competitive, with both teams exchanging early goals. Sam Kerr opened the scoring for Chelsea, but Yuka Momiki responded with a stunning strike from 30 yards to level the game at 1-1. The Blues went into halftime with hope, but the second half told a different story.
Maz Pacheco nearly gave Everton the lead when her shot hit the crossbar. Moments later, Chelsea struck again, with Kerr netting her second goal just seconds after Pacheco’s near miss. Ellie Carpenter and Erin Cuthbert added to the scoreline, sealing the victory for Chelsea.
Phelan reflected on the match, noting the importance of timing in football. "We had an opportunity when we hit the crossbar at 1-1, then by 53 minutes we were 3-1 down," he said. He emphasized that while the effort was there, the quality and execution fell short against a top-tier team.
Despite the defeat, the presence of Everton legend Leighton Baines and current player Merlin Rohl in the stands provided some encouragement. The Blues showed resilience, continuing to push forward even after the game slipped away. Phelan also handed a debut to Laila Harbert, who replaced Momiki late in the match, marking a bright spot in a challenging game.
Everton will need to regroup quickly as they look to bounce back in their next fixture, hoping to build on the positives from their first-half performance.
