Bruno Fernandes has made it clear that he expects Manchester United to compete for more than just a couple of trophies. Can the club rise to meet his ambitions?
Bruno Fernandes nearly left Manchester United last summer, but the club's commitment to him changed everything. Now, as captain, he’s having a standout season, leading Europe’s top leagues in chances created and eyeing the Premier League assist record.
In a candid interview with The Times, Fernandes expressed his dissatisfaction with the club's trophy haul over the past six years. He believes that two trophies simply aren’t enough for a club of United's stature. "Everyone who comes to Man United wants to win every trophy," he stated. "No one thinks about just one or two trophies in six years. You want to fight for all of them."
Fernandes pointed out that while they reached three finals and fell short, at least they were in the fight. He’s been vocal with the club about his desire to compete for the Premier League. "What I want from the time I’m here, I just want to compete. Because if I compete, I will be close to winning. If I don’t compete, there’s no chance I’m going to get close to any silverware."
He understands the expectations that come with the Manchester United badge. Many assume that players are drawn by money, but Fernandes insists that the allure lies in the club's history and the potential for glory. "You come to this club because of the history, because of what you think you can achieve," he said. "You can’t promise me I’m going to win the Premier League, but if you promise we’re going to be competitive — that’s all I need to know."
Fernandes is also in the running for the PFA Player of the Year and could feature in the Ballon d’Or conversation, despite the lack of team trophies. He reflected on how winning silverware at Bayern Munich has elevated Harry Kane's recognition. The midfielder knows that individual accolades often come easier with team success, but he remains focused on pushing himself and his teammates to be better.
As Fernandes continues to drive his ambitions, the question remains: will Manchester United rise to the challenge and match his expectations?
