Markus Babbel has reassured Liverpool fans that they can expect to see a 'top-class' player in Florian Wirtz next season. The 22-year-old German joined the Reds last summer for a hefty £116 million, bringing high expectations with him. However, his first season has been a mixed bag, with just seven goals in 46 appearances.
Speaking to Get German Football News, Babbel empathized with Wirtz's struggles in adapting to the Premier League. He recalled his own challenges when he arrived in England, emphasizing the league's intensity and competitiveness. "It’s a different league. I had the same problem when I came to England. It’s faster. It’s harder. There are so many top players there," Babbel explained.
Wirtz has shown glimpses of his talent but has faced difficulties alongside a struggling Liverpool side. Babbel noted that while Wirtz ranks high in chances created, the pressure for him to deliver goals and assists has been immense. Fans expect more from a player with such a significant price tag, but Babbel believes it’s not that simple.
"It’s been a bit unlucky for him because the whole team is struggling," he said. "I think he can play better, but there’s been a big improvement from him. Next season you’ll see a top-class Florian Wirtz."
Liverpool supporters will be eager to see if Wirtz can rise to the occasion and fulfill his potential as he settles into life at Anfield. The anticipation builds for what he might achieve in the upcoming campaign.
