Stephen Warnock has weighed in on the growing scrutiny surrounding Liverpool manager Arne Slot. The former Red insists that if Slot wants to keep the Anfield crowd on his side, he needs to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Liverpool's season has been underwhelming, with the team limping towards the finish line despite still being favorites for Champions League qualification. Warnock spoke exclusively to Empire of the Kop, expressing that merely securing a spot in Europe’s elite competition won’t cut it for the fans. "You would have thought Champions League football is enough, but it seems that isn’t what the Anfield crowd wants," he said.
The frustration reached a boiling point after Liverpool's recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea, a match that showcased yet another lackluster performance. Wayne Rooney noted “worrying signs” throughout the season, while Jermaine Pennant raised doubts about whether Slot's style is sustainable at Liverpool.
Warnock did acknowledge the challenges Slot has faced, particularly with the situation surrounding Diogo Jota. "He has had an awful lot of overhaul in the squad," Warnock explained. "We don’t know how difficult that’s been for the squad and for him to handle himself as a manager."
Yet, the disconnect between the supporters and the football being played is growing. Warnock warned, "If he’s not challenging for the league, he’ll come under pressure." He also suggested that the style of play needs to evolve. The Anfield faithful are becoming increasingly restless after a series of flat displays.
The message is clear: Liverpool fans expect more than just European football. They want to see their team competing at the top. As the season winds down, all eyes will be on Slot and how he plans to reshape the squad and style for the challenges ahead.
