Dominik Szoboszlai didn't hold back after Liverpool's crushing defeat to Manchester City. The midfielder openly questioned the team's fighting spirit, and now manager Arne Slot has stepped in to respond.
In a post-match press conference, Slot addressed Szoboszlai's comments directly. He acknowledged that he didn't completely agree with the Hungarian's assessment of the entire match but recognized a critical moment where the team's standards slipped. "I should ask him what he means – what he means and what period of time. If he felt that was the whole game, I did not feel this until the moment they scored the 1-0," Slot said.
This distinction is crucial. For much of the first half, Liverpool was competitive and created chances, a sentiment echoed by Szoboszlai himself. He admitted the team had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them.
Slot pointed out how quickly things unraveled after City scored. "But then we had a throw-in, twice we conceded when we had a throw-in. And they go so fast. In those moments, you have to defend sharper," he explained.
He specifically noted a ten-minute stretch right after halftime where the team's fighting spirit was lacking. "I miss the fighting spirit definitely in the first 10 minutes after half-time… in that 10, 15 minutes of time, I missed fighting spirit but just the willingness to win your duel," Slot stated. That period proved pivotal, turning a challenging situation into a collapse.
Szoboszlai's sentiments echoed Slot's observations. He admitted, "The fighting spirit wasn’t there enough, the mentality wasn’t there enough." This growing concern about mentality isn't isolated. Virgil van Dijk also expressed his disappointment, labeling the result a “very difficult” one to digest. The players are clearly aware of the issues at hand.
With Paris Saint-Germain looming on the horizon, the focus now shifts to how Liverpool responds. Slot's message is clear: the team needs to sharpen its mentality and win those crucial duels. The pressure is on as they prepare for another high-stakes clash.
