David Moyes praised Arne Slot as a top coach but didn't hold back on his criticism of Liverpool's refereeing luck. Can the Merseyside derby bring more surprises?

David Moyes has come out swinging ahead of the Merseyside derby, defending Liverpool's Arne Slot while also taking a jab at the Reds. The West Ham manager called Slot a 'top coach' but questioned his comments about refereeing decisions affecting his team.

In a recent press conference, Slot mentioned how referee decisions impacted his side during a 2-2 draw against Everton last season. That match saw a controversial equaliser from James Tarkowski, and it ended with Slot being sent off for confronting referee Michael Oliver. Fast forward to now, and Moyes finds himself backing Slot despite the Dutchman facing scrutiny as his team struggles this season.

Moyes said, “He has done a brilliant job, and I’ve got to say he is a really good coach – that is from a neutral point of view.” But he quickly pivoted to Liverpool, stating, “I’m not sure I’m having him saying they are getting bad decisions at Anfield. If you ask any Premier League manager, they will tell you that if there is one club that gets all the decisions, it is Liverpool.”

Moyes' comments about Liverpool's luck with referees are contentious. Many Liverpool fans would likely disagree, especially considering the events of last year's derby at Goodison Park. Everton's first goal came from a questionable free kick, and a clear foul on Ibrahima Konate went unnoticed, leading to Tarkowski's equaliser. In the return fixture at Anfield, a dangerous challenge from Everton's defender on Alexis Mac Allister went unpunished, as did a reckless lunge from Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk.

As the two teams prepare to clash, the tension is palpable. Moyes may respect Slot’s coaching abilities, but his remarks about Liverpool's refereeing history add an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming match. Will this derby be defined by skill on the pitch or the drama off it?
