Liverpool's hefty summer spending hasn't paid off as expected, with only two new players making a significant impact. Can they turn things around?

Liverpool FC's summer transfer spree, which saw the club spend a staggering £446 million, is now facing serious scrutiny. Journalist James Pearce claims that only two of the new arrivals have truly justified their hefty price tags.

The Reds brought in a host of talent, including Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni, and club-record signing Alexander Isak. However, the collective performance of these players has fallen short of expectations. After clinching the Premier League title just a year ago, Liverpool now finds itself battling for a Champions League spot.

In his analysis for The Athletic, Pearce pointed out the struggles of several signings during Liverpool's recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Wirtz, who arrived with a £116 million price tag, failed to make an impact in both legs against PSG. Pearce noted that he was overshadowed by players like Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, raising questions about whether he can live up to such expectations.

Frimpong also had a rough outing, struggling so much that he was substituted at halftime. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has been a concern as well, with his performance seen as a significant downgrade from Alisson.

In contrast, Ekitike and Kerkez have emerged as the only two signings who have made a positive impression. Ekitike has been a standout with 17 goals, becoming Liverpool's top scorer this season, although his progress is now halted due to a serious injury. Kerkez, after a shaky start, has settled into a reliable role in the squad.

As the season progresses, the performances of the remaining signings will be closely monitored. Liverpool fans will be hoping for a turnaround as the team fights to reclaim its status among Europe's elite.
