Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa has turned what should have been a celebratory final day into a tense affair. Instead of a straightforward farewell to Mo Salah and Andy Robertson, the Reds now face a crucial match against Brentford at Anfield, with Champions League football still hanging in the balance.
Ray Houghton, a former Liverpool midfielder, expressed his disappointment on The Official Liverpool FC Podcast. He expected a strong response from the players after their lackluster 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but what unfolded at Villa Park was far from encouraging.
Houghton noted, "I was really looking for a response from the players after the game against Chelsea." Liverpool managed to equalize early in the second half through Virgil van Dijk, sparking hopes of a turnaround. However, a slip from Dominik Szoboszlai allowed Ollie Watkins to score, and the match quickly slipped away from Liverpool.
The term 'crumbled' resonates deeply with Houghton, especially given Liverpool's alarming defensive record this season. With 52 goals conceded, only five teams in the Premier League have let in more. John Aldridge voiced his shock at how easily opponents have exploited Liverpool's vulnerabilities, while Robertson himself admitted that the performance against Villa was “a long way short of the levels of this club.”
Houghton believes the squad must step up against Brentford, especially with Salah and Robertson set to depart. He stated, “I think the players owe them two when you look at what they’ve done for the club.” Liverpool needs more than just a result; they need to show pride and gratitude for two players who deserve a proper send-off, not a flat and nervous farewell. The pressure is on, and it will be interesting to see how they respond.
