Liverpool FC has put itself in a strong position for Champions League qualification after a successful run in the Premier League. Can they secure their spot with a crucial win at Manchester United?
Liverpool has been riding high since the Premier League resumed after the international break. As of early April, they were clinging to the fifth and final Champions League spot, just one point ahead of Chelsea and three clear of Brentford and Everton.
Recent hard-fought victories over Fulham and Everton have allowed the Reds to stretch their lead over sixth place to seven points. With only five matches left in the season, that’s a significant cushion.
Looking ahead, Liverpool faces a challenging schedule. They host Crystal Palace on April 25, then travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on May 3. Following that, they have Chelsea at home, Aston Villa away, and finish the season against Brentford at Anfield.
The upcoming matches won’t be easy. Crystal Palace has often been a tricky opponent for Liverpool, and all four of their May opponents currently sit in the top seven. Notably, Liverpool lost to four of these teams in the reverse fixtures earlier this season, with three of those defeats coming away from home.
To secure a top-five finish, Liverpool needs nine more points. Opta gives them an impressive 89.2% chance of achieving that. The best-case scenario would see them clinch Champions League qualification with a win at Manchester United. If they can win their next two matches and the teams chasing them remain stagnant, a victory at Old Trafford would allow them to relax for the final three games.
However, for that to happen, Chelsea, Brentford, and Bournemouth need to pick up at least four points in their upcoming matches. Brighton, Everton, and Sunderland would also need to secure two wins to keep their hopes alive. The situation is fluid, with Brighton and Chelsea facing off soon, guaranteeing at least one team will drop points.
Liverpool has put themselves in a promising position, but the road ahead is fraught with challenges. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether they can secure their place in next season’s Champions League.
