Keyrol Figueroa, a promising talent in Liverpool's academy, has made a significant decision regarding his international future. The 19-year-old forward, who has yet to make his senior debut for the Reds, announced he will switch his allegiance from the United States to Honduras.
Figueroa has previously represented the USA at various youth levels, earning seven caps for the under-20 side. However, his heart lies with Honduras, the country where his father, Maynor Figueroa, made a remarkable impact, earning 181 caps and competing in two World Cups.
On Monday evening, the Federación de Fútbol de Honduras shared a video on X, featuring Keyrol alongside his father at Wigan’s Brick Community Stadium, where Maynor enjoyed a successful stint. In the video, Keyrol expressed that representing Honduras is “the most beautiful thing.”
The decision comes after Honduras’ Director of Sport, Francis Hernandez, played a crucial role in persuading the young forward to embrace his father's heritage. Figueroa’s choice is a bold one, especially considering he previously stated he wouldn’t feel comfortable playing against the USA. Now, he faces the prospect of competing against his former national team in future CONCACAF tournaments and World Cup qualifiers.
Figueroa has shown promise this season, notably scoring a hat-trick against Everton’s under-21s. As he embarks on this new chapter, fans will be eager to see if he can follow in his father's footsteps and make a mark on the international stage. With time on his side, the young forward has the potential to shine in future World Cups, just like his dad did.
