Liverpool's Champions League aspirations took a serious hit following a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Parc des Princes. The loss has left fans and pundits alike questioning the team's direction under manager Arne Slot, and former Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant didn't hold back in his critique.
After the match, Pennant took to X to express his frustration. Initially, he attempted to find a silver lining, noting, "The highlight and best thing about tonight was seeing Alexander Isak back fit and get a run out. I clapped and I cheered, enough said." But that optimism quickly faded as he laid into the team's performance.
"This is a disaster," Pennant declared. He pointed out that Slot had previously led the team to league success, but now the squad appeared almost unrecognizable. "From formations to team selection to lack of pressing and zero intensity at times, it’s just not working, and we’re at the end of the season," he added, emphasizing that the bare minimum for a club like Liverpool is to show intensity.
Despite the grim assessment, there’s still a glimmer of hope. Liverpool heads back to Anfield for the second leg, and while the performance in Paris raised eyebrows, they technically remain in the tie. Ally McCoist believes the Reds can still pull through, noting they outran PSG, even if they managed just three attempts on goal without hitting the target.
Yet, Pennant remained adamant. He acknowledged that Slot inherited a transitioning squad but questioned how a team that was Premier League champions could fall so far. "Please explain to me – from the Klopp era to now? He didn’t leave Liverpool in the dire place it’s in now, while spending almost half a billion," he remarked, underscoring the discontent among fans and former players alike.
As Liverpool prepares for the crucial second leg, the pressure is mounting. The team needs to find its identity and intensity quickly, or risk watching their Champions League dreams slip away.
