Hugo Ekitike will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup after suffering a serious injury. How will Liverpool cope without their young striker?

Liverpool FC has received devastating news as France confirms that Hugo Ekitike will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious injury. The young forward's hopes of representing his country in the upcoming World Cup have also been crushed.

France manager Didier Deschamps announced the severity of Ekitike's injury following the Champions League exit to PSG. He stated, "Hugo suffered a serious injury on Tuesday evening against PSG. The severity of his injury will unfortunately prevent him from finishing the season with Liverpool and participating in the World Cup."

Deschamps expressed the impact of Ekitike’s absence, noting, "Hugo is one of the dozen young players who have made their debuts with the national team in recent months. He had perfectly integrated into the group, both on the pitch and off it. This injury is a huge blow for him, of course, but also for the France team."

The emotional weight of the situation is palpable. Deschamps added, "His disappointment is immense. Hugo will regain his top form, I’m convinced of it. But I wanted to express all my support to him, as well as that of the entire staff. We know he’ll be fully behind the France team, and we’re all thinking of him very strongly."

For Liverpool, this injury leaves a significant gap in their attacking lineup. Early medical assessments indicated a long-term absence, with reports suggesting Ekitike could be sidelined for up to nine months due to an Achilles rupture. This not only ends his season prematurely but also rules him out of the 2026 World Cup, marking a crushing blow for the young talent.

Ibou Konate, a teammate, expressed his sadness, saying, "I am very sad for him… I think it’s bad… it’s very hard for him at this moment." With Liverpool's campaign already faltering after the defeat to PSG, losing a key player like Ekitike only deepens their struggles. The team now faces the challenge of regrouping without one of their promising forwards, and it remains to be seen how they will adapt moving forward.
