Chris Sutton has not held back in his criticism of Liverpool's high-profile summer signings. Can they turn their fortunes around this season?
Chris Sutton has delivered a harsh verdict on Liverpool's two marquee signings from last summer's massive spending spree. The Reds splashed out a record £100 million to bring in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, only to surpass that with a £125 million deal for Alexander Isak on deadline day. However, both players have struggled to make a significant impact at Anfield, combining for just nine goals this season.
Speaking on the FPL Podcast, Sutton expressed his disappointment, saying, "I wouldn’t touch Isak, and Wirtz – terrible, terrible." His comments reflect a growing frustration among fans and pundits alike regarding the duo's performances.
Wirtz showed flashes of brilliance earlier in the season, netting six goals in ten games between Christmas and January. Yet, he has since gone 13 matches without finding the back of the net. Critics have pointed to his physicality, with Tony Cascarino recently lamenting that Wirtz often indulges in showboating without delivering results.
Isak's first season has been marred by injury, sidelined for four months with a broken leg. It’s understandable that he needs time to regain his form, but the pressure is mounting. In his four appearances since returning, he has yet to score, leaving fans wondering when he will finally make his mark.
Both players arrived with high expectations, and while they have shown glimpses of their potential, the reality has been disappointing. Liverpool fans will be hoping for a turnaround soon, but for now, the scrutiny continues.
