Liverpool's Hugo Ekitike faced a harsh reception from Brighton fans as he left the pitch in tears following an injury.

Brighton fans showed no mercy as Hugo Ekitike limped off the pitch after suffering an injury during Liverpool's match. The French striker went down following a challenge from James Milner, who had just made a similar tackle on Dominik Szoboszlai. Ekitike tried to shake off the pain but was soon substituted for Curtis Jones as manager Arne Slot had to make an early change.

As Ekitike made his way off the field, visibly upset, the jeers from the Brighton crowd only grew louder. BBC Sport's Aadam Patel noted that Ekitike looked devastated, receiving consolation from teammates while being escorted by the club doctor. The Brighton fans, frustrated by what they saw as gamesmanship from the Liverpool forward, continued to boo him as he headed straight down the tunnel.

Lewis Steele, reporting on social media, echoed the sentiment, pointing out that Ekitike's tears reflected the disappointment of a player who has been a bright spot in Liverpool's season. This injury is particularly concerning for Slot, given the lack of depth in his attacking options.

Ekitike's injury record had been clean since his summer move to Anfield, with only two days lost to thigh issues this season. Last year, he missed just three days due to minor injuries. Losing him now is a significant blow for Liverpool, especially after an impressive start to his career at the club.

While it's easy to understand the frustrations of fans, the scenes in Brighton were unsettling. Footballers often face scrutiny for theatrics on the pitch, but the reaction to Ekitike's injury crossed a line. The atmosphere turned sour as the match unfolded, overshadowing what could have been a moment of sportsmanship.
