Ally McCoist has weighed in on Liverpool's struggles this season, pinpointing Darwin Nunez as a significant loss since his departure last summer. After Liverpool's Premier League title triumph in 2024/25, the club saw a notable exodus, with Nunez moving to Al-Hilal for £46.3 million. Since then, he has scored nine goals in 24 appearances for his new club.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist reflected on Liverpool's transfer decisions, stating, "I think they’ve missed the big boy up front, Darwin Nunez. He was criticized, and a lot of it was justified, but the one thing he did, he was a presence. He ran about, he made himself a real nuisance, he chipped in with some goals. They’ve missed him as well I think."
Nunez's time at Liverpool was often marred by criticism, particularly regarding his finishing. Even so, he brought an undeniable energy to the pitch. He was known for his work rate and knack for scoring crucial late goals, which endeared him to the fans. His contributions included memorable stoppage-time winners against teams like Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.
McCoist's comments echo sentiments previously expressed by Wayne Rooney, who noted that Nunez "brought something to the team" despite not always being at his best. Liverpool's decision to sell him last August seemed reasonable at the time, given his waning influence in the squad. However, as the season unfolds, it’s clear that the Reds could have used his unique skill set and tenacity.
With Liverpool facing challenges in their attacking lineup, the absence of Nunez is becoming increasingly evident. The question now is whether they can adapt and find a way to compensate for what he brought to the team.
